I'm so lucky!

So the boy is at Chelsea Market and amazingly remembered I had mentioned the new Jacques Torres chocolate store opening in DUMBO.  He called to say he was at the Chelsea Market Jacques Torres and what did I want to eat.  I got all flustered and excited and he responds,

"Oh, I shouldn't have called you.  I should've just surprised you with a random assortment of chocolates."
This is me now:

R&R.

Sometimes, we all need a bit of rest and relaxation.  At my parents' house in NJ for the weekend.

Wish I were here ... Kefalonia, Greece.  From a NYTimes travel piece a few years back.

Old v. New.

Who is hotter?  The old Brawny guy or the new one?

I remember when they were doing the "makeover" and there was discussion about his new updated look.  Gotta say, they both got something going on...

"Chinese" Food.

Lately, I've been jonesing for nothing but take-out/delivery Chinese (American) food.  Crab rangoon.  Pork fried rice.  Chow fun noodles.  Hot and sour soup.  General Tso's Chicken.  Perhaps this has something to do with the sluggishness I've been feeling lately?

Need to get back to healthy.  Stat!

Boy v. Girl fights.

(sorry I missed posting yesterday ... was putzing about Brooklyn).

The following conversation occurred between me and one of my oldest guy friends.  Agree/disagree?  True/false?

me: i let him win the fight
D: oh

  you're a girl
 me: so?
D: you'll get him back later
me: OMG
  HAHAHAHAHAHA
  HAHAHAHAHA
D: lol
D: you didn't "lose"

Symmetry.

Sometimes everything in life, just lines up completely perfectly.  Now is that time.

Pay it forward. FAILURE.

A great story/lesson, on why you should ALWAYS be nice to the people around you.

So last night, I was lucky enough to be offered a spare ticket to the premiere of "Time Stands Still" (2nd time around with 3 out of the 4 cast members from last year).

I didn't really know what to expect at a premiere.  My other theatre-mates were stuck in traffic (with my ticket) so I waited outside the theater for a good 20 minutes.  During this time I noticed that there was random crazy lights flashing going on opposite of where I was standing.  I got closer to get a look and I realized there were paparazzi/photographers for the famous people who were going to be in the audience.  As I waited, I only recognized two of the many photograph-worthy faces:

Well, the photographers and flashes went CRAZY when this lady arrived:

I had no idea who she was.  And when I ended sitting next to her in the THIRD row from the stage, I didn't pay much attention.

Things I noticed:
1.  She and her lady-friend were both DRIPPING in shiny (what I assumed were and now am pretty sure were) diamonds.
2.  She and her lady-friend were speaking an Eastern-European language (I assumed Russian, after some research, it seems that it was most likely Czech).
3.  She started shivering and was apparently freezing in the theatre during the performance (I responded by holding my trench a little tighter lest I also suffer from the magical effects of modern temperature maintenance technology).

TODAY, I find out that she was, indeed, IVANA TRUMP.  WHY DIDN'T I OFFER HER MY COAT?  OR MY EXTRA SCARF?  OR SOMETHING???  Maybe in return, she would've been so grateful and appreciative of my helpful and giving nature that she would've given me a car, or a Trump Tower apartment, or a job in her fashion empire, or SOMETHING from her rumored divorce settlement ($20 million, the $14 million family estate in Connecticut, a $5 million housing allowance, $350,000 annual alimony, all of her jewelry and 49% of Mar-A-Lago, the family home in Palm Beach).  I'm sure the nice lady could've spared SOMETHING for the thoughtful, young Asian girl who offered up her coat.  Alas, here I am, sitting in my cold internship office, wishing I were a nicer person.

(I'm not saying you should ONLY be nice with the expectation of receiving something in return, but that you should be nice in general, because you just never know who you could be helping!)

How to store/display sunglasses.

Saw this on imgfave.com recently.  I would've used a prettier hanger and maybe put some other trinkets on it.  But I think it's a cute idea.

Is it Lust? Or is it Love?

Maybe it's just *winter*

I've wanted extra long (to or over the elbow) gloves since last winter.  There was a beautiful pair on gilt.com and I completely totally regret not buying them when I had the chance.  I talked myself out of it on a "rational" level .... worst decision ever.  Okay, probably not the worst decision ever, but definitely one that I regret.

Last winter my mother bought me this BEAUTIFUL long fur vest and as much as I LURV it, and it's one of the warmest things I've ever owned, my arms get a bit chilly even when wearing my warmest cashmere.  I've decided that the solution is beautiful long leather gloves that fit over my sleeves. =)

In other winter forecasting, these cashmere tights look like I just might have to own them ... and wear them ALL the time.

Also in love with the uber-feminine silhouette on this military-inspired coat.  Normally I'm not such a fan of the military-look, but the pleated girly skirt - I LOVE!!!

My biggest problem.

is the giraffe in my brain.

This weekend was worse than usual because the "giraffe" was a gigantic sinus cold/infection/headache making my head explode.

Lonely at the top.

Read this article about Angelina the other day.  Reminded me of this t-shirt I got when I was visiting Princeton as an eager little high school junior.  I still wear it from time to time, mostly when I'm out running.  The thing I found funny about the article, is this woman is a professor of psychology and she discusses this phenomenon like it's the first time anyone's thought about it:
Depending on the woman and everything else going on in her life, there are times when the need for female friends is more or less important, and when opportunities are more or less available. Yet, a dearth of friendships is often one of the costs that many high-achieving women pay for celebrity and success.

It's not a novel concept; the more you accomplish and achieve, the less peers you will have.  And then who do you commiserate with?  Celebrate with?  Share your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with?

Women in Business.

Chanel from this blog

I always read up on what women in business should wear.  Perhaps because I've always had an obsession with the suit (bought my first "suit" as a 10th grader and then my first "real" suit as a high school senior).

This NYTimes article is interesting.
“I want to feel confident, comfortable and a little sexy in what I wear to work,” Ms. Giannini said. “A pantsuit is an essential item in my wardrobe and I propose one every season in my collection. It has a sophisticated, strong and sleek look, but the cut and detailing makes it absolutely feminine and modern.”
Ms. Sander: “Many women decide on pantsuits because they are easy to wear. But as with men, a suit only works if it is well cut, individually fitted and of quality material. The same, of course, goes for a skirt suit, but there are not so many truly comfortable, easy skirts around."
Alber Elbaz of Lanvin: “I always felt that men were powerful and women were strong, but women are shifting from strength to power. I was just reading that in medical school there are more women than men. Women are sliding into men’s territory.”
Ms. Philo of Céline: “The idea of it being a problem is the problem,” she said. “And the question itself is problematic because the implication is that it is different for women than men. And as long as we focus on that, then women will always feel second to men in the workplace.
I hope when people see me in a suit they feel this way, as a "free-spirited woman with the confidence to make a man's world her own":
Mrs. Obama has yet to wear a stark, tailored pantsuit. If she does, it may be a symbol not of a retrograde vision, but of a free-spirited woman with the confidence to make a man’s world her own.

Sandwiches.Love

I somewhat unexpectedly fell in love a few weeks ago.

While at my internship in Brooklyn, I developed a healthy craving for a DELICIOUS sandwich.  Seriously, not just any sandwich, but a REALLY, REALLY delicious sandwich.

So I googled "sandwiches brooklyn heights yelp."  That's how I discovered Lassen & Hennigs.  I am, no joke, quite literally, in love with the sandwiches here.  And everything the place offers in general.  Like, teenager-obsessed-can't-stop-thinking-about-it in love.

Every week, I count down to Wednesday and Thursday (my internship days), looking forward to my L&H lunches.  I used to pack lunch from home - oh-so-frugal.  But after my first sandwich here.  Frugality and bad economy and student budget be damned!  I'll skip eating the first half of the week and enjoy my L&H sandwiches, please.

I have ordered a different sandwich every single time and have yet to be disappointed.  The strawberry lemonade is divine (it ACTUALLY tastes of sweet strawberries rather than just being dyed pink!).  The chocolate chip cookies are perfectly cooked - just a BIT crunchy with a hint of chewiness in the center.

OMG.  I am so happy today is Wednesday.

White on rice.

Source: this blog

I was recently told I was the "whitest Korean girl" someone had ever met.  And that I might be "whiter than some white people."  I wasn't offended.  Just curious as to what makes me so "white."  Thoughts?

The Moms (one of my worse/non-apt titles)

I recently watched an episode of 30 Rock (The Moms) where Jack Donaghy's mom (Colleen) finds out that he is seeing two women.  The following is a few lines from when Colleen confronts Jack (at 7:25).

Colleen: Be a man and pick one!
Jack: I can't!  They both give me different things; one connects me to the man I was, the other inspires...
Colleen: Just listen to yourself, Jack!
Jack: I know it's gay but it's my gay problem and I'm handling it!

I had to include the last two lines just because they're so awesome.  But Jack's first outburst is the one that got me thinking: What happens when you have to make that choice?  Not just in significant others, but to a variety of choices in life.  Where to live?  What job to take?  What to study?  Who to be friends with?  What hobbies to pursue?

If someone or something connects you to your past and who you were/are and another someone or something inspires you to be different or better in the present/future, and you have to choose, how are you supposed to go about making that decision?

(And I know I keep claiming/promising to start writing more regularly/frequently ... but maybe this time I really will ... ?)
